The Issues: Veterans - Gulf War Illness
On November 30, 1999, the Pentagon released
a study that found the first conclusive evidence of brain
damage in affected veterans of the Gulf War. For those with
this illness, it was welcome news. I've supported giving priority
treatment to veterans suffering from Gulf War Syndrome and
providing comprehensive benefits to veterans with Gulf War
illnesses. I also worked with Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV),
the former Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Veterans
Affairs, to provide for the establishment of a service-connected
designation for Gulf War illnesses. I am pleased that this
service-connected designation was enacted in 1998.
