The Issues: Veterans - Working for Wisconsin's Fair Share in
Federal Benefits
According to the Wisconsin Department
of Veterans Affairs, the average Wisconsin veteran receives
about 75 cents for each $1 paid out in federal benefits to
veterans nationally. In addition, while Wisconsin ranks 19th
in veteran population in the United States, it was one of
only seven states that saw a reduction in total veterans benefits
paid from fiscal year 1998 to fiscal year 1999. Due to these
troubling numbers, I notified the Veterans Benefits Administration
about my concerns regarding the total amount of veteran benefits
that veterans in the State of Wisconsin receive from the VA
as compared to other states and about the low percentage of
Wisconsin veterans who are enrolled in VA benefit programs.
