Agriculture Farm
Bill Local Foods
Congress should promote local foods, which
boost local farming economies and provide healthy foods to
consumers. The Senate Farm Bill closely links farmers to their
communities through a provision, similar to language I first
proposed in an amendment in 2006 and was included in my Rural
Opportunities Act, which will allow government programs and
schools to choose foods to purchase specifically because they
are locally produced.
Vital funding in the Senate Farm Bill for the Seniors Farmers
Market Nutrition Program, Farmers Market Promotion Program,
and Assistance for Community Food Projects will also help
promote local foods. Meanwhile, the Healthy Food Enterprise
Development Center created by the Farm Bill will help rural
communities make the best use of their local agricultural
products.
