The Issues: Veterans - Benefits for Conditions Related to Exposure
to Agent Orange Congress and the
Administration must recognize the obligation we have to our
veterans and ensure that the commitment the United States
has made to them will be honored in full. In October 2000,
I wrote to the Secretary of VA urging him to take the necessary
steps to add diabetes to the VA's list of diseases associated
with Agent Orange. I was pleased that in November 2000 the
VA added diabetes to the list, helping to ensure that our
veterans can begin to receive the benefits they deserve.
I will continue to monitor the progress of the VA in this
area. The VA must improve the availability of veterans services
and make changes in health care provisions as research and
events warrant. I am also committed to ensuring that our veterans
receive service-connected benefits for conditions related
to their exposure to Agent Orange.
