Human Rights
As the bipartisan 9/11 Commission found "[o]ne of the lessons of the Cold War was that short-term gains in cooperating with the most repressive and brutal governments were too often outweighed by long-term setbacks for America’s stature and interests." It is in the U.S. interest to promote respect for human rights, and this should be a core principle of our engagement with Africa. I continue to speak out against gross human rights violations in places such as Chad, Guinea, Sudan and Zimbabwe. I have also authored legislation to ensure that respect for human rights is prioritized in our relationships with strategic partners on the continent. For example, in 2008, I introduced the Support for Democracy and Human Rights in Ethiopia Act. |
